About Role
The role of Deputy Head requires someone with a deep knowledge of childcentred pedagogy and a passionate belief in children learning through inquiry. They will support the Head of the Early Years school in planning and implementing the strategic direction of Early Years and will play a key role in liaising with the other schools’ leadership within Dulwich College Beijing. They will meet on a regular basis with the Deputy Head of Junior and Senior School to ensure that the student learning journey is smoothly aligned throughout the whole College.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic direction
- Establish and implement an ambitious vision and ethos for the future of the school
- Ensure the vision for the school is clearly articulated, shared, understood and acted upon effectively by all
- Develop, implement, and facilitate the strategic direction of the school/college
- Support the Head of Early Years to lead school development planning and the school self-evaluation process
- Lead aspects of the Early Years school development plan as assigned by the Head of Early Years
- Lead curriculum, assessment, and standards in the Early Years school
- Lead aspects of quality assurance procedures e.g., action planning to secure continual improvements and high standards
- Ensure high-quality teaching and learning is embedded within the Early Years school
- Design, implement, and lead on-going monitoring of academic systems across the school to remove barriers to learning and produce high progress and achievement
- Develop the Early Years provision
- Work with SLT to map the curriculum to create long-term and mediumterm plans
- Collaborate with Deputy Heads across the college to align the student journey
- Maintain and develop reciprocal links with other schools and organisations as appropriate
- Support professional learning on pedagogical and pastoral initiatives, including the coaching/mentoring of staff
- Enhance parent partnerships and involve them in children’s learning
- Collaborate with EiM and senior leaders across the group to align policy, procedures and approaches
- Develop educational policies and practices as required
- To support the Early Years Leadership Team and the College Leadership Team by being adaptive and supportive to the smooth running of the school
Teaching and Learning responsibilities
- To provide an excellent teaching and learning provision as required, exemplifying best Early Years practice when teaching
- To develop staff to motivate, support, and challenge all students
- To effectively model how to use classroom management strategies, differentiation, and the learning environment to enhance teaching and learning
- To liaise with the EAL and AEN departments to ensure the best provision for all children
- Manage reporting of student development and progress to parents in line with the school’s assessment and reporting schedule, both in written form and at parent consultation days/evening
- To demonstrate a good understanding of how assessment impacts on the teaching and learning cycle and ensure that effective use is made of data to ensure the progress of all pupils
- Oversee transition arrangements between year groups and into/across phases e.g., nursery, foundation to KS1, and KS1 to KS2
- Identify, lead and develop the professional development of all staff
- Promote excellence and innovation in teaching and learning
- Ensure vertical and horizontal articulation of the curriculum
- To develop educational policies and practices as required
- To support pupil motivation, engagement and self-regulation
Operations
- Manage the day-to-day running of the school
- Develop and maintain efficient and effective systems
- Line management responsibilities for teaching staff and curriculum leaders including performance management
- Lead weekly department/curriculum meetings
- Monitor and review the quality of teaching and learning and pedagogy, for example by carrying out formal and informal observations and audits of staff and the teaching environment
- Regularly meet with other leaders and managers e.g., Chinese Coordinator, SENCo, Assistant Head, and Head of EY
- Lead assemblies as required
- Draft the weekly newsletter article
- Lead behaviour management, attendance and punctuality, and health and safety
- Organise and oversee key EY events, activities, trips and meetings as required
- Develop and evaluate Early Years standards
- Collect, review, and report on data
- Provide training and development for staff and parents including curriculum guidance
- Support the Head of Early Years with the budget, including resource management
- Effectively communicate with parents, including meetings and responding to parents’ queries
- Oversee curriculum planning, assessment, moderation, pupil progress meetings as part of a cyclical process
- Support the Head of EY with admissions including new entry assessments and exit procedures, baseline assessments, and transition arrangements
- Oversee the supervision of students throughout the school day (indoor and outdoor environments, breaks, lunchtime, start and end of the day)
- To play a full part in the life of the school community and support the school ethos
- To ensure that challenging but realistic targets for attainment and progress are set and tracked for every student
- Lead to enable own and others’ work life balance and personal wellbeing
- To enhance parent partnerships and involve them in children’s learning
- Responsibilities for safeguarding and wellbeing
- To carry out any duties when reasonably required by Head of Early Years or members of CLT, including the duties of the Head of Early Years in their absence
Timetabling and Staffing
- To draw up School timetables and the specialist timetables for EY
- To respond to the changing needs of each school throughout the year, adjusting the timetable to suit
- To manage the scheduling of staff cover arrangements
- To organise non-curriculum timetables and rotas
- To organise and manage professional learning e.g., weekly staff development meetings, new staff induction, and teacher planning week
Calendars and Events
- Compile the School Calendar for publication before the end of the summer term, liaising with all concerned parties to resolve issues
- Disseminate details of and arrangements for events to staff and parents via Staff Briefing and Meetings and other means as appropriate
- Co-ordinate the work of the PRC Administrators regarding matters relating to the calendar, timetable, and reporting
College Publications
- Work with the Marketing team to coordinate timely contributions towards our college publications, such as The College and the `Yearbook’
- To organise and produce the weekly newsletter
Personal and professional development
- To take part in the performance management process of the College
- To attend professional learning as required
- To disseminate information from professional learning attended
Qualification and Experience Required
Education
- At least 3 years of management experience
- At least 7 years of teaching experience
- Early Childhood education experience
- Bachelor’s degree and recognised teaching qualification
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Knowledge
In-depth knowledge and understanding of:
- Previous leadership / responsibility position
- School curriculum – English National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage
- Inquiry-based learning
- EAL provision
- SEN provision
- Current educational issues and up to date curriculum developments
- Application of effective learning and teaching strategies that attain high levels of student achievement
Experience
- Expertise to secure students’ wellbeing and belonging and enable students to become resilient learners
- A clear focus on learning and robust systems
- Prior experience as an deputy head or assistant head is preferable
- Professional knowledge (of curricula, quality management, school organisation and current educational issues)
- Use of data to improve learning and teaching
- Successful partnerships with school parents and communities
- Ability to support, motivate, lead, and manage staff to teaching and learning
- Organisational and administrative skills, and experience of efficient resource management
